Summary: Exercise physiologists and coaches frequently base training objectives on physical and physiological demands of sports, including relative contributions of energy supply mechanisms during the activity. Oxidative and non-oxidative metabolic contributions to 2000 m rowing ergometry have been studied previously in rowers of various abilities and using different methods, but never on a group of elite athletes. The results of this study have practical implications for athlete profiling, sport classification and time trial performance interpretation.
