Summary: Son of the Reverend Titus and Fidelia Church Coan, American missionaries at Hilo on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, Titus Munson Coan Jr. (1836–1921) came to the United States aboard a New Bedford whale ship and attended Williams College in western Massachusetts when Melville resided in nearby Pittsfield.
