Summary: The aim of this article is to point out the importance of two rhetorical techniques which Jerome used throughout Epistula 57, namely comparison and contrast. The most important comparisons and contrasts are discussed in order to illustrate their significance for the understanding of the letter. To give one example, in paragraphs 5–11 Jerome compares his approach to translation (the sensus de sensu-approach) with those of Classical authors, other Christian authors, and also with the approach of the authors of the New Testament and the Septuagint translators. On the other hand he compares the approach of his opponents (who insisted on translation ad verbum) with the approach of Aquila, the proselyte. Jerome contends that he received a thorough schooling in literature and that his approach is authorised by the Classical and Christian literary tradition and by Biblical and ecclesiastical authority. He contrasts it with the approach of his opponents which totally lacks authority and only bears witness to their ignorance. In the end it is concluded that insight into Jerome's use of comparison and contrast not only illuminates certain aspects of the letter but that it can even serve as a useful hermeneutical key in the interpretation of Epistula 57 as a whole.
